Whatever you and Jeanette decide to do or where to go, I hope that you do it with your arms locked together. Don't let the bastards take the most important thing you two have: one another.

my heart breaks every time i read one of your posts. i couldn't bear it if my house and it's carefully curated lifetime of contents was lost. i don't know how you are managing this. i know i couldn't.

i know i've said this before and i don't mean to sound cavalier but i really think you should move from the state. go to a red state where there will be less government interference, where the cost of living is not jacked up and where people let you be.

you'll never be happy in a soulless house on your old land, remembering what was.

chose a place that has old houses with character and needs sensitive architects to keep them fit.

if you want to check out charleston, SC, you are welcome to our spare room.

Carolyn- Thank you. Interestingly enough I have relatives who have moved to the Carolina's who suggest that I move there, rather strongly.

we're in Charleston, but there are more rural places. we know a marine carpenter who lives on 10 acres in Hollywood, SC in an old RV and built his state of the art wood shop there. i think they pretty much leave you alone in those parts. i'm pretty sure you could build the kind of house you want.

the governor signed into law a bill that made asking a person's covid19 vaccination status illegal for purposes of employment. sadly, that came too late to save my job.

we live in town in a large 1915 house that we are still renovating. the marine carpenter is (slowly) making the kitchen cabinets. i am gradually landscaping the yard, digging down through 40" of packed clay which goes to the dump.

the mosquitoes are fierce.

we love interesting house guests. if you want to explore the area, i can offer you and your wife a very comfortable (and free) home base.

I am in escrow for a small home in the Tujunga foothills. Has a fireplace. has gas. outdated and old but I like it. I had the same problem. "Like for like" is what I heard again and again. Except sprinklers. except fireplace. Except slab instead of footing. Except solar. Except electric outlets at all gas appliances. except this, that and the other thing. Add a few feet? Fuggedaboutit. they'll measure it and assess you. Insurance paid about $280/ft squared and cost is up to $450. No financial help. I am suddenly owner/builder, if I screw up and lose money it's on me. Tujunga looks nice. No SCE lines behind either

If we’re quoting song lyrics how about a little Led Zepoelin “When the Levy Breaks”:

“It's got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home. . .

Crying won't help you, praying won't do you no good

No, crying won't help you, praying won't do you no good“

Steven, your saga is absolutely heartbreaking and I’m so sorry. Thank you for writing. It’s an important story to hear. I’m glad you still have words — because there just really aren’t any. What a terrible terrible mess. Oh the humanity! Take care of yourself.

Thank you, Janet. many Altadenan's have expressed these thoughts to the press and the press refuses to print them. The press is rather than exposing the wretched acts of government covering for them. all the more heartbreaking. As Bob Dylan once said "Everything is broken".
